Notes
Mohamed Makiya is considered, with Rifat Chadirji, to be one of the most prominent Iraqi architects of the twentieth century. He returned to Baghdad in 1946 and established Makiya Associates, enabling him to become ever more aware of the heritage of Iraqi architecture. Makiya was one of the original founders of the Department of Architecture at the College of Engineering, Baghdad University in 1959. His firm eventually went on to operate in Bahrain, Oman, London, Kuwait, Doha, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai. He is appreciated for his effort in bringing together traditional Islamic and contemporary architectures. Makiya died in London in 2015.
