Notes
Salah Zeitoun graduated from Cairo University in 1939 at the age of 22. He started his career as an architect in the design section of the Rural Affairs Department. In 1944 he became head of the Architectural Design Section affiliated to the Ministry of Health with a specialization in the design of medical buildings. He was sent on an academic mission to the USA between 1946 and 1948 where he obtained his Masters degree in Architecture from the University of Illinois. There he joined the fellowship of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
In addition to his high official post he also established his private architectural practice together with his lifetime architect friend Mustafa Shawky. Their success granted them a number of significant projects, such as the
Cairo International Airport designed in 1954 and the
Cairo American College in Maadi designed in 1966. Their reputation expanded internationally with accomplished projects in other Arab and European countries.
Zeitoun's son, architect Ahmed Salah Zeitoun, eventually took over his father's private practice.
