After graduating from University of California, Berkeley in 1951, Awni established his own architectural firm in partnership with architect Adnan Zaki Amin and later Abdel Sattar Ayach. During his career, he created many important buildings such as the Iraqi Airlines in London (1963) and Al-Mustansiriya University in Baghdad (1966). He was also one of the founders of the Department of Architecture in the University of Baghdad in 1959.
