The project was initiated by President Gamal Abdel Nasser and is located in Nasr City, Nasser's main urban achievement, as a a showcase of the importance of sports in Nasserist Egypt. It is one of the largest stadiums in Africa.
The commission went to German architect Werner March, known for the Berlin Olympic Stadium of 1936. Structural design was assigned to the Egyptian firm ACE (Moharram-Bakhoum).
The stadium was completed in 1960, and was inaugurated by President Gamal Abd El Nasser on 23 July that year, commemorating the eighth anniversary of the Egyptian Revolution of 1952.
