Notes
The commission of this house came at a time when Chadirji was indulging in research concerning courtyards and gardens and comparing their designs from around the world with the Iraqi garden “Al-Baqja”.
In this context, this house’s design revolved around a courtyard rich with flowers and trees and featuring British colonial characteristics. The courtyard was carefully endowed with vegetation and waterbodies in a manner that divided it into subspaces. This allowed it to be occupied simultaneously by different independent groups of users. Some of these subspaces came as extensions to the interior rooms facing them. The upper floors also overlooked the courtyard and profited from the generated social interaction there. The proportions of the design followed Le Corbusier’s Modulor.
