Notes
In 1967, Rifat Chadirji, the Iraqi architect, designed a house for himself in Halat, by the sea, north of Beirut. In this cubic stone house, he reinterpreted traditional architectonic features, such as the kiosk and the arch, that he composed asymmetrically, being concerned with the–modern–relationship of the openings with the interior, rather than with a restitution of the central order derived from the traditional Lebanese model. Here, the open double-height space of the living room is juxtaposed with the more enclosed services on the ground floor and interacts spatially with the bedroom above, through the windows overlooking the main sitting area. Chadirji had a very productive career in Iraq, at the heart of an artistic and intellectual movement that he described in Al-Ukhaydir wa-al-Qasr al-Balluri: nushu' al-nazariyah al-jadaliyah fi-al-imarah, London: Riyad al-Rayyis, 1991.
Chadirji's numerous writings have a lasting influence in the Arab world.
