Notes
Several projects were designed by Sayed Karim for the city of Riyadh in the 1950s.
One of the designs contains 1,000 apartments and a whole complex of ancillary buildings: hotels, offices, shops, etc. In this "purdah living" (gender seperation), a complex system of walkways at the second floor, destined for women, links the various blocks together. Seperate lifts serve alternate floors.
In his design for a city block of 100 apartments, Karim proposed sixteen maisonettes to each double floor, with shops and communal services on the ground floor.
In another design, Sayed Karim, proposes an annular building with 250 apartments. At the core, a supermarket is surmounted by a kindergarten serving the community.
