Notes
After a collaboration with George Rais and Theo Canaan, mainly on the Pan Am Building and Villa Jamil Mekkaoui, Assem Salam went on to design the Residence of President Camille Chamoun.
The Residence is representative of the desire of modernity of the regime articulated both in public buildings and in private commissions such as Chamoun's own residence. The house being very near to the sea, Salam's design responds rationally to climate with a courtyard protecting the inner spaces from exposure to strong wind. It is organized on split levels to adapt to the slope and ensure privacy. The formal and spacial strategy is a play of planes, in local stone, that seem to slide and tie the interior with the exterior. The same happens with flooring that spills from one area to another, reinforcing the flowing of space. The gardens were designed by architect Gaby Tabet.
The house was demolished.
