Notes
Kazim Kenan was born in 1920 in Istanbul. He is the son of Ali Kenan (1882-1969), engineer from Ecole Polytechnique 1902 and Ecole des Mines 1904. Before receiving a formal education in architecture, Kazim Kenan worked with Ecochard at the Municipality in Beirut between 1941 and 1945. He entered ALBA for a year in 1946, then headed to Paris to study at the Beaux-Arts (atelier Perret), graduating in 1952. He trained at the office of Auguste Perret in Paris, and worked for Mr. Royer, architecte en chef des PTT (Kenan later designed PTT exchanges in Lebanon). Upon his return, he worked for Albert Menassa for a year , ending in 1953. Kenan did many competitions: for a city in Bagdad, Iraq in 1948, for the Cité Sportive in Beirut in 1952 in which he ranked 3rd, and for Telephone Exchanges and Tobacco Régies many of which he won and built. In 1970-72, Kenan assisted Turkish architect Sedad Eldem for the Turkish Embassy in Beirut, and due to the fact that Eldem never came to Beirut during construction, Kenan contributed significantly to the project.
