Nile Hilton Hotel
First American-style hotel in Cairo as a result of Cold war politics, with 11 storeys and 400 bedrooms. While
Welton Becket is considered the principal architect,
Mahmoud Riad worked as the local architect on the project. The latter's firm has written:
"With the inauguration of the
Arab league building next door [by Mahmoud Riad], the municipality of Cairo decided to develop a hotel to serve the diplomats when the league was in session. The project started in 1957 as a joint venture with American architect Welton Becket [...] Project team included Mahmoud Riad (Project Architect), Hussein Bakry, Tawfik Helmy, Safaa Seroor, Abd el Moneim Ahmed and Hassan Mansour. The Hotel was later acquired by the Ritz Carlton and transformed into the Nile Ritz Carlton." (RiadArchitecture)
In 2011, the façade was demolished and turned into a curtain glazing system.
