Designing Modernity


The Arab Center for Architecture in partnership with the Goethe Institut, Ramallah present Designing Modernity: Architecture in the Arab World 1945-1973, a book edited by George Arbid and Philipp Oswalt.

The book launch and Symposium are being held live and online on Friday May 6 and Saturday May 7, 2022 at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin (HKW).

Restoration Guidelines Manual

The Arab Center for Architecture announces the publication of "The Restoration Guidelines Manual for buildings constructed between the 1930s and the 1970s". It is published by ACA (2021) with the support of Amman Design Week and Goethe Institut. Co-authors are Naji Assi Architects and Yammine Yammine.

The manual will soon be available online and is available at ACA (open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays) in print distributed for free.

Screening of "Frank Lloyd Wright, the man, the architect, the legacy"


On Sunday May 30, 2021, there will be a screening of "Frank Lloyd Wright, the man, the architect, the legacy" by film director Dr. Sigrid Faltin.

The screening will be followed by a talk with Dr. Faltin, Dr. George Arbid, the director of the Arab Center for Architecture, and Kristi Jamrisko Gross, museum guide and group tour coordinator at Frank Lloyd Wright's Pope-Leighey House.

The event is moderated by Joumana Rizk.

Beirut 2020: Notes from the Field


In support of the Arab Center for Architecture, Amman Design Week is launching an event in solidarity with Beirut.
The event is hosting architects/designers in Beirut to work on a manual of good practice for the rebuilding and restoration of the city.

Speakers will be sharing their experiences on the ground in Beirut, exchangind notes, techniques and details of collaborations between architects, urban designers and restoration experts.

Both heritage and modernist buildings will be covered, as well as public shared spaces.

Speakers: Dr. George Arbid, Mr. Naji Assi, Dr. Yasmine Makaroun and Dr. Charbel Maskineh.
Moderator: Dr. Janset Shawash

Hosted by Amman Design Week and the Arab Center for Architecture.

Beirut 2020: Reflecting on the City after the Blast


In collaboration with Sapienza University of Rome's Postgraduate School for Restoration of Monuments and Landscape Protection, Yara Rizk and Nael Chami are hosting a discussion between scholars and architects concerning the reconstruction efforts in Beirut after the blast.

Dr. George Arbid from the Arab Center for Architecture, Dr. Mona Harb and Dr. Yasmine Makaroun, will be presenting different approaches concerning the subject.

Dr. Carole Levesque and Architect Mazen Haidar will join them afterwards for a round table discussion on the cultural future of the city.

The event is free and open to the public, and it will be recorded.

Reviving Design & Rebuilding a City


Claudine Abdelmassih from the Arab Center for Architecture spoke at an even hosted by Fantasmeem. She is joined by three other distinguished panelists: Soleil Gharbieh from The Arab Fund for Arts and Culture, and Rana Haddad and Pascal Hachem from 200Grs. وقيّة.

The event titled "Reviving Design & Rebuilding a City" is a digital roundtable discussing possible solutions for creatives and design professionals in the aftermath of the Beirut Blast.
