International Archives Day at the Sursock Museum


The Arab Center for Architecture, among other institutions, is participating in an event in celebration of International Archive Day organized by the Modern Heritage Observatory.

This exhibition, which is being shown at the Sursock Museum, intends to introduce the public to different endangered historical collections, as well as provide insight into the importance and effect of maintaining the region's contemporary legacy as a method of preserving cultural memory.

The Arab Center for Architecture (ACA), in partnership with the
International Writers’ House (BeK),
is introducing a series of conferences, bringing together writers and
architects, to discuss the representation,
development and planning in Arab cities from a multidisciplinary
perspective.

The first conference, to be held on MAY 18TH AT 6:00 PM, will bring
together novelist Mohamed al-Fakharany (Egypt)
and architect Omar Nagati (EGYPT), and will focus on the city of Cairo.
The Talk is moderated by Nadine Touma, (Dar Onboz, Lebanon)

The event will take place at the ARAB CENTER FOR ARCHITECTURE,

Bagdad, the building of a modern capital (1914-1960)


The Arab Center for Architecture is hosting a conference through which Caecilia Pieri who will present her latest book written in French: Bagdad, la construction d’une capitale moderne (1914-1960).

Pieri is Associate Researcher at the French Institute of the Near-East (IFPO), Beirut, where she was formerly Head of the Urban Observatory (2011-2015), after spending 25 years as a Senior Editor in the field of architecture and heritage. She received her PhD at EHESS, Paris, on the subject of the modernization of Baghdad, where she has been conducting fieldwork since 2003 throughout 19 sojourns.

She works on cities in conflict, and the use of heritage as a social marker and tool for politics as the coordinator of a research program within Ifpo/AUF, "Heritage at war in the Mediterranean region". A member of ICOMOS- International and DOCOMOMO-Lebanon, she collaborates with MUAMA/UNESCO (World Heritage) as an expert for modern heritage in the Arab World. She is the author and the co-author, among others, of Bagdad Arts Déco (2008 – also published in English and in Arabic), of Bagdad Renaissance. Contemporary Art in Iraq (2003), and The Le Corbusier Gymnasium in Baghdad (2014).

For the occasion, the book will be sold at the Center ($60).

Workshops on cities, architecture and built heritage for school kids


The Arab Center for Architecture is organizing two workshops on cities, architecture and built heritage for school kids Thursday 31 March and Friday 1 April, 2016.

The workshop aims at initiating the youth to the understanding of the urban space, the built environment and the preservation of heritage through an interactive presentation and a design exercise.

Dates: Thursday 31 March (in English and Arabic) and Friday 1 April (in French and Arabic)
Time: 9.00am to 1.00pm
Age of participants: 11-14 years old

The elaboration of this educational kit is funded by European Union.

Launching of Workshop on Cities, Architecture and Built Heritage


On 9 March, teachers’ day, the Arab Center for Architecture will be launching its first educational workshop for school students on cities, architecture and built heritage.

Time : 9.30am to 1.30pm
Age of participants : 11-15
Fees : Free of charge
Language : Being an interactive workshop, Arabic, English and French will be spoken.

This project is funded by the European Union.
